This interview is one in a series of oral histories with individuals selected for their ability to provide information about the history and development of black music in Los Angeles. It was completed under the direction of UCLA Ethnomusicology Professor Jacqueline DjeDje with funding from an Arts Initiative grant from the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture. Videotapes of the interviews are housed at the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive.
Patterson initiated the process with an introductory phone conversation and a pre-interview meeting at her residence. Preparation included familiarizing with Cox Book: Central Avenue; also various web searches on the subject of early twentieth century Twin Falls Idaho.
The interviewer and Patrick Keilty, editorial assistant, each compiled portions of the table of contents. Jane Collings, principal editor supplied the interview history. Patterson provided the spellings of proper nouns and the complete names entered in brackets in the text. Cox reviewed the transcript. She verified proper names in sessions three through six and made a substantial number of corrections and additions. While she reviewed sessions one through two, she did not verify proper names in those sessions. Cox supplied the biographical summary.
The transcript of this interview is a verbatim transcript of the audio recording. It was transcribed by a professional transcribing agency using a list of proper names and specialized terminology supplied by the interviewer. The interviewee was then given the opportunity to review the transcript in order to supply the missing or misspelled names and to verify the accuracy of the contents, and those corrections were entered into the text without further editing or review on the part of the Center for Oral History Research (COHR) staff.
In some cases the audio recording may differ slightly from the transcript, either because the transcriptionist did not accurately transcribe what was said or because of the changes the interviewee made at the time of their review.
Records relating to the interview are located in the office of the UCLA Library's Center for Oral History Research. Original digital video cassettes are deposited with the Department of Ethnomusicology at UCLA. Additional materials relating to these interviews are located in the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive.
