In Miss Deane's home at 1210 North Kenter, Los Angeles, California.
Interview sessions took place on: August 16, 20, 1966; October 4, 1966; November 15, 18, 29, 1966; December 6, 13, 1966.
Each session lasted approximately two hours and produced one hour of recorded tape. The interviews were conducted in the morning. This manuscript represents a total of eight hours of recording time.
Deane and Schippers.
The interviewer encouraged an auto¬biographical approach within a chronological framework. Questions were frequently asked. At several sessions, the interviewer used annuals and schedule of classes to stimulate topical discussion.
A verbatim transcript of the tapes was edited by the interviewer. The editing was minor in nature; punctuation was introduced, spelling corrected or verified, syntax slightly emended. The chronology of the interviews was retained, with no rearrangement of the material. The interviewee reviewed and approved the edited manuscript. Miss Deane added short passages where additional information or clarification was deemed necessary. Occasional words and. phrases were changed or deleted, and proper names verified. The use of brackets indicates words and inserted passages that were not part of the original tapescript.
The index and supporting documents were prepared by Bernard Galm, Editor-Interviewer, Oral History Program, UCLA.
