Four morning sessions of about hours, 9: 00 a. m. to 11: 30 a. m.
8 hours, 35 minutes.
Snyder and Hawkins.
Interviewer Allegra Snyder broke the material into four major blocks, each to be covered in a session: 1) Dr. Hawkins's early years; 2) her work at Columbia University and growing interest in the fields of both education and dance; 3) her contribution to the development of the Department of Dance at UCLA; 4) recent years—her interest in dance therapy and new philosophical breakthroughs in dance and education. In a preliminary session they discussed this approach and refined the content objectives of each session. After each recording session they reviewed the overall outline and reconfirmed the material to be discussed in the following week. Between recording sessions both Dr. Hawkins and Allegra Snyder did further research and review of the specific area or time period to be discussed. They both came prepared with materials, but their discussions on the tapes were completely spontaneous.
Sylvia Tidwell, editor, edited the interview. The verbatim transcript was checked against the original tape recordings and edited for punctuation, paragraphing, spelling, and verification of proper nouns. Words and phrases inserted by the editor have been bracketed.
Professor Pia Gilbert of the UCLA Department of Dance wrote the introduction. D. P, Gist, editorial assistant, assembled the index, table of contents, and interview history.
